Douglas Laing's Scallywag (700 ml)
฿2,899
Fred Douglas Laing established his Glasgow bottling house in 1948 on the principle that cask selection — not distillation — is the ultimate craft. Scallywag is the Speyside expression in Douglas Laing's Remarkable Regional Malts range, a series designed to deliver a single-region identity through blending rather than single-cask declaration. The blend draws on Speyside single malts including Mortlach, Macallan, and Glenrothes, all matured predominantly in Spanish Sherry butts — a deliberate choice that foregrounds the meaty, oxidative richness Speyside's heavier stills can produce rather than the lighter, floral profile the region is often reduced to. Bottled at 46% ABV, without added colouring and without chill-filtration, the natural oils and waxy texture of the spirit are preserved intact — a house-wide commitment Douglas Laing adopted before it became fashionable. What distinguishes Scallywag within its category is the Sherry-butt dominance across every component malt: this is not a whisky with a Sherry finish layered on top, but one where the cask is the primary structural decision from the outset. Dried dark fruit, baking spice, and the characteristic Mortlach sulphur-edged meatiness sit against a background of toasted oak and cocoa.
