Compass Box The Peat Monster (700 ml)

When John Glaser founded Compass Box in 2000, he set out to do to Scotch blending what a precision-minded winemaker would do to a grand assemblage — selecting individual casks by flavour architecture rather than brand name. The Peat Monster is the house's most confrontational expression of that philosophy: a blended malt built on a majority of Caol Ila and Laphroaig, two Islay distilleries whose heavily peated spirit carries the island's coastal, medicinal, and iodine-laced character, extended by medium-peated Highland malts that add body without diluting the smoke signal.

Component whiskies are aged in refill hogsheads and ex-bourbon barrels — a deliberate choice to keep the wood influence subordinate, letting the phenolic intensity of the Islay malts dominate rather than masking them under vanilla or caramel. The final blend is bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill-filtered, and without added colouring, preserving the natural texture and the faint coastal haze that chill-filtration would strip away.

What separates The Peat Monster from every heavily peated single malt is structural: by blending across distilleries, Glaser can tune the peat register — Caol Ila's cleaner, more maritime smoke against Laphroaig's tar-and-seaweed intensity — achieving a layered phenolic profile no single distillery can replicate alone. As a non-vintage, recipe-driven release, consistency is the point; the smoke is calibrated, not accidental.
