Laphroaig Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky Select Cask (700 ml)
฿2,699
Founded in 1815 by Donald and Alexander Johnston on the storm-exposed south coast of Islay, Laphroaig sits so close to Loch Laphroaig that its dunnage warehouses receive tidal Atlantic spray at high water — a maritime imprint that is structurally unreplicable at any inland Scottish distillery. The Kilbride Stream, which feeds the distillery's process water, flows directly over Islay peat bogs before reaching the mash tun, layering mineral-peat character into the spirit from the very first stage of production.
Select Cask is the expression where Laphroaig deliberately fractures its own house orthodoxy: where the core range relies almost exclusively on first-fill ex-Bourbon American white oak (a practice Ian Hunter pioneered in the 1930s), Select assembles Oloroso sherry butts, Pedro Ximénez hogsheads, ex-Bourbon quarter casks, and virgin American oak simultaneously — a four-cask marriage that pushes dried fruit and vanilla sweetness into direct tension with the distillery's signature iodine and tar.
That tar character is itself an engineering decision: Laphroaig's four spirit stills feature a narrow constricting section that forces intense copper contact and late spirit cuts, deliberately preserving medicinal, tarry phenolics that most distilleries would cut away. The asymmetric still configuration — three wash stills at 10,400 L, four spirit stills — slows distillation to protect this house character even as the Select cask regime softens its edges. The result is the only Laphroaig expression where PX-driven dark fruit meets full-force Islay peat without either element retreating.
