Lagavulin 12 Year Old (700 ml) (F26 Special Releases 2025)

When Peter Mackie won the legal battle for exclusive rights to the Lochan Sholum burn — peat-stained water descending 200 metres from the hillside of Bheinn Sholum — he secured not just a water source but the chemical backbone of Lagavulin's character. That same water feeds the 2025 Special Release, the annual cask-strength iteration of the 12 Year Old that has no permanent counterpart in the core range.

The distillery sits directly on Lagavulin Bay, Kildalton Coast, where dunnage warehouses absorb constant Atlantic sea-spray, pressing iodine and brine into every cask during maturation. The spirit inside those casks is the heaviest produced on Islay: wash stills filled to 95% capacity (versus an industry norm of 80–85%) and a spirit run lasting up to nine hours — the slowest on the island — deliberately suppress copper contact, retaining dense phenolic and tarry congeners at ≈35–38 PPM in the glass.

The 12 Year Old Special Release matures exclusively in refill American white oak ex-bourbon casks, bottled at cask strength (typically 56–58% ABV), non-chill-filtered — no caramel addition, no dilution. Where the flagship 16 Year Old softens Lagavulin's phenolic density with sherry-butt integration and additional years, this expression delivers the same architecture at full voltage, the tarry smoke and coastal iodine unmediated by sweetness.

No reliable batch-specific tasting data exists for the F26 2025 release; drinking window is broad given cask-strength bottling — best opened 2025–2032.
