When Charles Stewart Howard launched Chivas Regal in 1909 as a 25-year-old blend, no competitor carried such an age statement — a deliberate act that invented the premium blended Scotch category and set the malt-heavy philosophy still governing every expression today. The heart malt is Strathisla, drawn from the oldest continuously operating distillery in the Scottish Highlands (founded 1786, Keith, Moray), where process water travels one mile from the Broomhill Spring, naturally filtered through granite, lending a soft mineral backbone to the new make. Short-necked wash stills at Strathisla allow heavier vapours to rise unchecked, producing a full-bodied, generous spirit that resists the lean, grain-forward profile of most volume blends. Fermentation runs in traditional wooden washbacks — not stainless steel — providing thermal insulation for a steady, flavour-building two-day ferment. Component whiskies rest in American ex-bourbon and European ex-Oloroso sherry oak, with the age statement on any bottle marking the youngest whisky present; older Longmorn, Miltonduff, Braeval, and Strathclyde grain components contribute without declaration. The Speyside-centric malt-over-peat philosophy — deliberately rounder than Islay-influenced or grain-heavy peers — remains the defining house transgression in a category that often chases smoke or grain efficiency over orchard-fruit richness.
