Cognac Vieille Réserve (700 ml)
฿฿฿฿
Michel Forgeron is a grower-producer in Cognac's Grande Champagne — the appellation's premier cru — where the family has cultivated vines and distilled on-estate since 1984, a deliberate rejection of the négociant model that dominates the region. Controlling every step from vine to bottle means the Vieille Réserve is drawn exclusively from Forgeron's own eaux-de-vie rather than purchased stocks.
Grande Champagne sits on deep Campanian chalk and Cretaceous limestone, a soil structure that forces vine roots deep, concentrating aromatic precursors and producing distillates with the slow oxidative capacity required for long aging. The chalky subsoil is the geological reason Grande Champagne commands its premier cru status.
The Vieille Réserve is aged in French Limousin and Tronçais oak casks, with extended cellar time sufficient to develop the prized rancio character — a nutty, oxidative depth that marks genuinely old Grande Champagne. Forgeron's small-cellar approach means slower, more attentive barrel rotation than industrial houses allow.
What distinguishes this expression is its grower-bottled provenance: every drop traces to a single family's terroir, not a blending hall. The result is a Cognac where the chalk-driven floral lift of Grande Champagne remains legible beneath the rancio weight — a combination that blended house releases routinely obscure.
