Coutanseaux Aîné XXO Cognac (700 ml)
฿38,400
When Guillaume and Rodolphe Frerejean Taittinger revived Coutanseaux Aîné in 2015, they did so with a deliberate transgression: the house — founded in 1767 and dormant for most of the 20th century — would offer no VS, no VSOP, no standard age tier, entering the market exclusively at XO and above. The XXO is the house's mid-tier expression, yet it draws on eaux-de-vie aged 25 to 40 years, a range that places its youngest component well beyond the legal XXO minimum.
Every drop originates from Grande Champagne, Premier Cru de Cognac — the cru with the highest chalk concentration among all six Cognac sub-regions. That deep chalk-and-limestone subsoil drives slow, fine-grained extraction during aging and is the structural reason Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie outlast those of any other cru.
Distillation is performed sur lies in traditional copper alambics charentais — a choice that preserves lees-derived fatty acids and aromatic precursors through double distillation, building the textural density that sustains four decades of French oak contact. The grape source is 100% Ugni Blanc, whose naturally high acidity provides the backbone for extreme aging without oxidative collapse.
What no peer at this price tier routinely offers is a blend ceiling of 40 years from a house whose cooper origins make prolonged oak maturation the primary artistic medium — rancio is not incidental here, it is the point. Drinking window: approachable now; will hold and deepen for 15+ years in sealed bottle.
