XO.
Michel Forgeron is a rare breed in Cognac: a récoltant-manipulant who grows, distills, and ages entirely on his own estate in Ségonzac, the heart of Grande Champagne. That single-estate control — uncommon in a region dominated by négociant blending houses — means every eau-de-vie in this XO Carafe traces directly to Forgeron's own Ugni Blanc vines planted on the chalky, deep-limestone soils that define Grande Champagne's premier cru status.
Grande Champagne's chalk subsoil forces vine roots deep, producing low-yield fruit with high natural acidity — the structural backbone that allows spirits to age for decades without losing freshness. The XO designation requires a minimum of ten years in oak; Forgeron's Carafe expression draws on reserves considerably older, aged in Limousin oak barrels that progressively impart oxidative complexity and the prized rancio character — a walnut-and-aged-fat savouriness that only extended barrel contact on chalk-distilled spirit can produce.
What separates this expression is its single-domaine provenance presented in a hand-filled crystal-style carafe format, positioning it as a grower Cognac in a category where blended house styles dominate. The spirit sits at natural colour depth without heavy caramel correction, letting the genuine age show. Drink now or hold; the rancio will continue to integrate over years in bottle.
