When Hennessy commissions a living artist to wrap its VSOP Privilège for Lunar New Year, the bottle becomes a document of two crafts simultaneously. Shanghai-based painter Zhang Enli — known for monumental, gestural canvases — translates his ink-wash vocabulary onto the decanter, making this the visual counterpart to a spirit built on deliberate technical excess. The VSOP draws eaux-de-vie from all four premier crus — Grande Champagne's shallow clay-limestone chalk, Petite Champagne, the clay-flint of Borderies, and Fins Bois — each cru contributing a different structural register to the final blend. Hennessy's defining production transgression is distilling both with and without lees, then reintroducing heads and tails into the brouillis before the second Charentais pot-still pass, concentrating congeners that most houses deliberately strip away. The resulting spirit is aged a minimum of four years in Limousin oak from Hennessy's own forests — trees felled only after 80+ years of growth, cooperaged by hand on-site at a rate of 400–500 barrels per year. What is unusual here: the Fillioux family, sole Master Blender lineage for eight unbroken generations, assembled this blend to the same specification as every other VSOP vintage — the art edition changes nothing in the liquid, which is precisely the point.
