Maurice Hennessy created the XO category in 1870 as a private reserve for family and friends — a category the house invented, then gifted to the entire cognac industry. That origin as a personal standard, not a commercial one, still defines the blend's ambition. Sourced from Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies, and Fins Bois, the XO draws on the shallow clay-limestone chalk of Grande Champagne — soils that force deep root penetration and produce eaux-de-vie with the structural density required for multi-decade aging — alongside the clay-flint of Borderies, which contributes a rounder, more aromatic register. Distillation is performed in traditional alembic charentais copper pot stills, with both lees-on and lees-off batches included — a deliberate departure from houses like Martell that exclude lees entirely — and heads and tails are reintroduced into the brouillis before the second pass, concentrating congeners for greater depth. Aging proceeds in Limousin oak barrels produced at Hennessy's own cooperage, using staves from forests the house purchased roughly 42 years ago, with trees felled only after 80+ years of growth. The XO blends over 100 individual eaux-de-vie aged up to approximately 30 years, assembled by the Fillioux family — eight consecutive generations as sole Master Blender, an unbroken 200-year lineage unique in global spirits.
