Elena Walch Pinot Grigio Alto Adige D.O.C.
฿฿
Elena Walch, who took over the historic Tramin winery in 1986 and rebuilt it around single-vineyard discipline, produces this Pinot Grigio as a deliberate argument against the grape's reputation for dilution. Tramin sits at the southern end of Alto Adige's Adige Valley, where vineyards climb to 500–700 m on mineral-rich porphyry and glacial moraine soils — altitude that extends hang time and locks acidity even as the grape's copper skins accumulate phenolic grip. Fermentation is carried out in temperature-controlled stainless steel, preserving the site's cool-climate aromatic definition without the textural weight of oak; the wine undergoes no malolactic conversion, keeping its natural tartaric structure intact. What separates this expression from most DOC Pinot Grigio is the deliberate use of Alto Adige's diurnal temperature swings — sometimes exceeding 20 °C between day and night — to build the kind of saline mineral tension rarely found at this price point. Drink young to mid-term, within 3–5 years of vintage, when the citrus pith and stone-fruit tension are at their most vivid.
