Domaine de Cigalus was the first of Gérard Bertrand's estates to convert to biodynamics, beginning in 2002 — a deliberate proof-of-concept that would eventually scale across all 17 properties to make Bertrand the world's largest Demeter-certified producer. That pioneering commitment started here, in the IGP Aude Hauterive, where the estate's warm Mediterranean climate is tempered by the strong regional winds that reduce disease pressure and allow farming without chemical intervention.
The 2022 vintage across southern France was defined by heat and drought stress, producing low yields and concentrated fruit with elevated natural alcohol — conditions that compress aromatic intensity into the whites while demanding careful cellar management to preserve freshness. Cigalus Blanc is an unconventional assemblage for the Languedoc: Chardonnay, Viognier, and Sauvignon Blanc co-fermented and aged primarily in French oak barrels, with all winemaking decisions — harvest timing, racking, bottling — governed by the biodynamic lunar calendar.
What sets this cuvée apart within the Bertrand portfolio is the deliberate crossing of Burgundian variety logic (Chardonnay, oak aging) with aromatic Rhône character (Viognier) and Loire-style lift (Sauvignon Blanc) under a single IGP designation — a blend no AOP in France would legally permit. The 2022 delivers concentrated stone fruit and waxy floral depth from the Viognier, structured by oak-derived texture, with the Sauvignon Blanc providing cut and length on a warm, full-bodied frame.
