Chardonnay "Kings River"

Robertson Winery's Kings River Chardonnay originates from Robertson, Western Cape—a limestone-rich valley 190–220 metres above sea level, where diurnal temperature swings and calcareous soils produce mineral-driven white wines. The Kings River subregion benefits from Atlantic cooling funnelled through the valley, extending ripening and preserving acidity.

This expression is unoaked or minimal-oak aged, allowing the fruit and terroir expression to dominate. The winemaking prioritises freshness: cool fermentation in stainless steel preserves aromatic volatility and natural acidity. No malolactic conversion is typical for this style, maintaining crisp mouthfeel and citric precision.

The special feature is Robertson's limestone geology—a rarity in South Africa—which imparts a distinctive saline, flinty minerality absent in warmer-climate Chardonnays. This is a food-driven expression rather than a fruit-forward showpiece, built for cellaring 3–5 years or drinking young for its textural clarity.
