Crianza Ribera Del Duero D.O.
฿฿
Alejandro Fernández's Tinto Pesquera stands as the benchmark expression of Ribera del Duero's potential. The vineyard sits on the north bank of the Duero River at 750–850 meters elevation, where continental climate extremes—brutal winters, scorching summers—concentrate Tempranillo to remarkable intensity.
The wine undergoes 24 months in French and American oak, a regime that became the template for modern Crianza classification. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel, preserving the varietal's dark fruit character before oak integration. The result carries the signature of Pesquera's house style: structured tannin, deep color, and the mineral spine that Duero's slate and limestone soils impart.
This Crianza represents the transgression that elevated Ribera del Duero from regional obscurity to rival status with Rioja—Fernández proved that Spanish Tempranillo could age with Bordeaux-like complexity without abandoning its identity. The 2019 and 2020 vintages show the wine's typical 15-year drinking window, though the best examples reward patience into their third decade.
