Crianza Ribera Del Duero D.O.
฿฿
Condado de Haza was established in 1987 by Alejandro Fernández — the same man who built Pesquera — specifically to exploit a distinct estate in Roa de Duero, a cooler, higher-altitude pocket of Ribera del Duero sitting above 800 metres. Fernández's deliberate choice to keep this property separate from Pesquera was a statement about terroir: Roa's soils differ markedly, running to limestone-rich clay over sandy subsoils, which tempers the vine's vigour and concentrates berry character without the weight of lower-lying plots.
The continental climate here — baking summers, cold nights, and a short growing season — drives phenolic ripeness while preserving the natural acidity that defines the appellation. The Crianza is produced from 100% Tempranillo, fermented in stainless steel before spending 12 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels, followed by additional bottle aging before release. American oak contributes the cedar and vanilla backbone; French oak moderates and adds structure.
What sets this apart within the Crianza tier is the estate's single-vineyard focus at a price point where most peers blend across multiple sourced parcels. Dark plum, dried fig, tobacco leaf, and toasted cedar dominate, with firm but resolved tannins from the limestone clay. Drink now through 2028.
