Sylvain Pataille — a trained oenologist who consults for roughly 15–20 Burgundy domaines — founded this estate in 1999 farming entirely on leased land, a structural constraint that has never diluted the ambition: La Montagne is a single-lieu-dit Marsannay red built to articulate site over appellation convention. The parcel sits within the Marsannay AOC on the Côte de Nuits, where east-to-southeast-facing slopes at 270–330 m elevation combine limestone-based soils with iron-rich clay and gravel — conditions that push Pinot Noir toward mineral tension rather than plush generosity. Vineyards are certified organic (Ecocert) with biodynamic methods integrated since 2007, including horse-ploughing to preserve soil structure and massal selection to maintain genetic diversity. Vinification uses indigenous yeast throughout, with a meaningful proportion of whole-cluster fruit in an infusion-style maceration — long and gentle, designed to extract texture and aromatic lift rather than tannin mass. Aging runs 15–18 months in barrel at 15–30% new French oak, and the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal SO₂ added only at bottling. What separates Pataille's approach from peers is the analytical rigour behind the low-intervention philosophy: no formula governs élevage duration — each cuvée and vintage is assessed independently. In the very warm 2022 harvest, the whole-cluster regime proved its value, preserving freshness and aromatic lift against the vintage's ripe, generous fruit profile. Drink 2025–2032.
