Joseph Drouhin Volnay
฿4,900
Founded in 1880 and now stewarded by the fourth generation, Maison Joseph Drouhin completed a full biodynamic conversion of its Burgundy estate under Philippe Drouhin — earning ECOCERT certification for the 2009 vintage, an extraordinary commitment for a 100-hectare négociant-domaine hybrid. Volnay sits on the southern Côte de Beaune, its clay-limestone soils over a compact limestone bedrock delivering the appellation's signature combination of floral lift and silky tannin grip that distinguishes it from the more muscular Pommard to its north.
The 2021 vintage was defined by spring frost and persistent mildew pressure, forcing strict sorting and yielding one of the smallest crops in recent memory. Where fruit was healthy, the result was notable freshness and precision rather than generosity. Winemaker Véronique Boss-Drouhin vinified with total destemming for this village-level cuvée, fermenting in small open vats with indigenous yeasts over 2–3 weeks of maceration, using pigeage and pumping-over. Élevage followed in French high-forest oak (228L–300L barrels, 15–25% new oak) for 12–18 months, with oak seasoned approximately three years before coopering to minimise raw wood influence.
What sets this expression apart is Drouhin's house-wide refusal to chase extraction: the entire red portfolio is built on finesse, and the 2021 vintage's naturally lower yields and cool-season acidity align precisely with that philosophy — producing a Volnay where the appellation's violet and red-fruit character reads with uncommon clarity.
