Chateau Leoville Poyferre Saint-Julien Grand Cru Classé
฿฿฿
Leoville Poyferré occupies a 80-hectare estate in the heart of Saint-Julien's left bank, where deep gravel beds over clay subsoil define the appellation's signature mineral spine. The vineyard's southeast-facing slopes on the Günz gravel plateau benefit from morning sun and afternoon drainage that concentrates phenolic ripeness in Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (25%), and Petit Verdot (10%).
The wine undergoes traditional Bordeaux fermentation in temperature-controlled concrete vats, followed by 18 months in French oak (50% new), with regular racking to manage extraction. This measured oak integration—neither excessive nor timid—allows the wine's mineral core and structured tannin framework to remain paramount. Petit Verdot's late-ripening phenolics anchor the blend's aging potential.
Poyferré's house style prioritizes linear, age-worthy structure over immediate opulence; the wine demands 5–8 years of bottle age to fully integrate its tannins and reveal secondary complexity. Current releases show the precision and restraint that have defined the estate since its 1855 classification.
