Contrada Marchesa Etna Rosso DOC
฿฿฿
Donnafugata's Contrada Marchesa sources from the Marchesa vineyard on Etna's northeastern flank, where volcanic ash and pumice soils at 700–800 metres elevation face the Tyrrhenian Sea. The site's cool aspect and mineral-rich terroir define the expression.
Nerello Mascalese — Etna's indigenous red — undergoes wild yeast fermentation in concrete vessels, a technique that preserves the wine's aromatic precision and allows volcanic minerality to surface without oak interference. The wine ages 12 months in neutral French oak and concrete, maintaining freshness and textural definition.
This is a low-intervention Etna: no temperature control during fermentation, no new wood, no extraction. The result is a wine that tastes of black volcanic stone, dried red cherry, and white pepper — the signature profile of high-altitude Nerello on ash-based soils. Donnafugata's commitment to concrete fermentation here reflects a broader Etna movement away from traditional barriques toward vessels that amplify mineral expression rather than mask it.
Drink 2024–2032. Peak drinking window: 2025–2029.
