Ornellaia was born from a family rivalry — Marchese Lodovico Antinori founded the estate in 1981 in deliberate competition with his cousin's Sassicaia and his brother Piero's Solaia, making Bolgheri's Super Tuscan triumvirate a single extended family's argument about greatness. That founding ambition is still encoded in every production decision. The estate's 99 ha divide between two distinct blocks: the original 41 ha surrounding the winery on denser clay soils, and the 58 ha Bellaria property to the north on stonier, more alluvial ground — the latter delivering the saline freshness and vibrant lift that separates Ornellaia's profile from more inland Bordeaux-style blends. Tyrrhenian Sea breezes moderate summer heat across both sites at 50–120 m elevation, preserving acidity through full phenolic ripeness. Each variety and individual block is vinified separately, fermented in stainless steel and concrete below 25°C, then macerated 10–15 days total. Malolactic fermentation occurs in barrel — 70% new French oak barriques, 30% once-used — where the wine ages 18 months (12 as individual lots, 6 post-assemblage), followed by a minimum 12 months bottle age before release. What no peer in Bolgheri replicates: the annual Vendemmia d'Artista project, where a commissioned international artist interprets a single winemaker-chosen word for each vintage, with proceeds to the Guggenheim Foundation. The 2021 vintage note is not yet confirmed in the brand library; the wine's structure — built on marine-alluvial complexity and extended oak integration — rewards cellaring of 10–15 years from vintage.
