When Cyril Henschke bottled Australia's first single-vineyard Shiraz from Mount Edelstone in 1952 — at a moment when the country's fine-wine identity was defined by blends and fortifieds — he established a template The Wheelwright continues to honour six decades later. The Wheelwright draws fruit from Henschke's Eden Valley Vineyard on Cranes Range Road, planted from 1968, sitting at approximately 500 metres elevation on sandy loam over sandstone and schist. That altitude and fractured subsoil combination drives natural acidity retention and produces the five-spice/star-anise aromatic signature that separates Eden Valley Shiraz from the richer, lower-elevation floor-Barossa style. Farming across all Henschke sites is certified organic and biodynamic, with viticulturist Prue Henschke's four-decade programme progressively refining tannin maturity and fruit precision. In the cellar, grapes are fermented in open-top vessels with full malolactic fermentation, zero tannin additions, and aged in French and American oak hogsheads using seasoned wood — the house philosophy leaning on old-vine natural acidity rather than structural additions. What distinguishes The Wheelwright within the Henschke range is its role as the estate's dedicated Eden Valley Shiraz expression outside the single-vineyard tier, offering the same cool-climate terroir logic at an accessible entry point into the family's style. 2019 delivered extreme low yields — 10–15% of normal crop — due to frosts, hail, and a record 44.3°C heat event, producing wines of concentrated purity; drink 2025–2035+.
