Chateau Duhart Milon Rothschild 2018

Duhart-Milon shares the same gravel-rich plateau as Château Lafite Rothschild — the Carruades plateau in northern Pauillac — and has been managed by the Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) team since 1962, a stewardship that brought rigorous parcel-by-parcel viticulture to what had been an underperforming estate. The vineyards sit on deep Günzian gravel over clay-limestone subsoil, a drainage profile that stresses the vine roots downward and concentrates phenolic intensity even in generous years.

The 2018 growing season delivered exceptional heat accumulation with well-timed rainfall, producing grapes of unusual physiological ripeness without excessive alcohol. The blend is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with a supporting share of Merlot, fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats before maturation in French oak barriques for approximately 18 months, with a portion of new oak typical of the estate's measured approach — sufficient to frame structure without overwhelming the site's mineral signature. Malolactic fermentation proceeds in barrel.

What distinguishes Duhart-Milon within the Pauillac hierarchy is its position as the only Rothschild-owned classified growth in the appellation outside Lafite itself, giving it access to the same technical team and nursery material. The 2018 is drinking well now but carries the tannic architecture to develop through the mid-2030s.
