Arnaldo Caprai's Montefalco Rosso Riserva anchors itself in the volcanic hillsides of Montefalco, a medieval hilltop town in central Umbria where mineral-rich soils and limestone bedrock define the regional character. The estate's vineyards sit at 350–450 meters elevation, where diurnal temperature swings sharpen acidity and deepen color in the dominant Sagrantino grape.

The winemaking follows classical Umbrian protocol: fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel, followed by 18 months in French oak barrels (a mix of new and neutral wood). The riserva designation demands minimum two years of aging before release—this expression spends additional time in bottle before shipment, building structural integration. No malolactic softening is rushed; the wine retains the tannin architecture Sagrantino is bred for.

Montefalco Rosso is a blend-based category (minimum 65% Sagrantino, with Merlot and Barbera permitted), and Caprai's interpretation leans toward the austere end of the spectrum—this is not a fruit-forward expression. The riserva tier signals intent: a wine built for 10–15 years of evolution, where current structural grip will gradually yield to secondary complexity.

Drink 2026–2038. Current release shows the tannin definition and mineral spine expected of young Sagrantino; decanting 90 minutes before service opens the mid-palate.
