Joseph Drouhin Beaujolais Villages Nouveau 2019
฿1,880
Founded in 1880 and now in its fourth generation under the Drouhin family, Maison Joseph Drouhin is one of Burgundy's largest certified organic and biodynamic estates — a distinction that extends even to its Beaujolais Nouveau, a cuvée most négociants treat as an afterthought. The Beaujolais Villages appellation draws Gamay from the granite and schist-rich soils of the northern Beaujolais hills, where shallow, free-draining terrain forces deep root penetration and concentrates aromatic intensity in the berry. Vinification follows Drouhin's house philosophy of indigenous-yeast fermentation, eschewing the commercial yeasts that dominate Nouveau production and allowing the terroir's character to express itself rather than a laboratory strain. The 2019 vintage is characterised as full, aromatic, and expressive, with rich fruit and good underlying structure — unusually generous for a Nouveau, which typically sacrifices depth for speed. What sets this expression apart is Drouhin's refusal to treat Nouveau as a volume play: the same biodynamic farming standards applied to its Grand Cru parcels govern this cuvée, with horse-ploughed soils and cover crops between vine rows. Drink now through 2021 for peak primary fruit, though the structural backbone of the vintage supports modest short-term cellaring beyond the typical Nouveau window.
