Joseph Drouhin Beaujolais Villages Nouveau 2018
฿1,880
Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1880 and now stewarded by the fourth generation of the Drouhin family, applies the same biodynamic rigour to its Beaujolais Nouveau that governs its Grand Cru parcels — horse-ploughed soils, ECOCERT-certified organic farming, and indigenous-yeast fermentation across the entire estate. The 2018 vintage delivered exceptional phenolic maturity, producing Gamay with concentrated red fruit and supple structure even in a carbonic-maceration format designed for early release. Beaujolais Villages Nouveau is vinified by semi-carbonic maceration — whole-cluster, CO₂-saturated fermentation that extracts vivid fruit aromatics while keeping tannin extraction deliberately minimal, followed by rapid bottling to preserve primary freshness. No extended oak aging is applied; the wine goes directly to bottle, preserving the volatile, juicy character that defines the Nouveau style. What distinguishes this expression within the Drouhin portfolio is the deliberate rule-break: a house that restricts itself almost entirely to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay steps outside that singular focus to produce a Gamay-based wine, yet subjects it to the same biodynamic farming standards as its Chambertin and Musigny parcels. The 2018 vintage character — warm, generous, phenolically ripe — translates in Nouveau format to a wine best consumed within 12–18 months of release, at its most expressive in its first flush of fruit.
