Cono Sur 20 Barrels Pinot Noir
฿1,700
When Cono Sur inaugurated a dedicated Pinot Noir annex winery in 1999 — then expanded it with a 530,000-litre premium cellar in 2009 — the investment signalled a structural commitment to Burgundian discipline inside a New World operation. The 20 Barrels expression draws on Fundo El Triángulo in Casablanca Valley, where Pinot Noir vines planted in 1989 grow in red clay and granitic sand over a coastal subsoil cooled daily by Humboldt Current fog, slowing ripening and preserving natural acidity. Fermentation proceeds in small open tanks via foot-treading and manual pigeage, prioritising human extraction over mechanical intervention — a deliberate choice that limits tannin aggression in a thin-skinned variety. Aging runs 14 months across a split regime: 70% French oak barrels plus 30% large French oak foudres, the foudre fraction moderating new-wood imprint while sustaining slow micro-oxygenation. What separates 20 Barrels from peers at this price tier is precisely that foudre component — most Chilean Pinot Noir at this level defaults to 100% barrique, compressing fruit behind oak; here the larger vessel preserves Casablanca's cool-site transparency. The 2017 vintage, drawn from a season of measured coastal temperatures, delivers taut red-fruit character and saline mineral lift with a drinking window extending comfortably through the mid-2020s.
