Elena Walch Pinot Nero Alto Adige D.O.C.

Elena Walch's Pinot Nero originates from the Alto Adige/Südtirol D.O.C., a region straddling the Dolomites in northeastern Italy where limestone-rich soils and diurnal temperature swings define cool-climate viticulture. The vineyard sites sit at 400–600 meters elevation, where morning Alpine air and afternoon sun create the tension between ripeness and acidity that characterizes the region's Pinot Noir expression.

Walch employs temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel, preserving the wine's aromatic precision and bright acidity. The wine undergoes 12 months in neutral French oak, allowing the fruit to develop without heavy oak overlay—a restraint typical of Alto Adige's quality producers. Malolactic fermentation is completed in barrel, softening tannins while maintaining the wine's mineral backbone.

This is a food-driven Pinot Nero: lean and mineral-driven rather than fruit-forward, with the structure and transparency that Alto Adige's limestone terroir imparts. The 2021 vintage (or current release) drinks well now and will age gracefully for 5–7 years, developing secondary complexity without losing its Alpine freshness.
