Penfolds Bin 23 Pinot Noir
฿1,885
Penfolds was founded in 1844 by Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold at Magill Estate to produce fortified wine for medicinal use — a house whose entire modern identity is anchored in Barossa Shiraz and American oak. Bin 23 Pinot Noir is the deliberate transgression: Penfolds applying its multi-regional selection discipline to a variety that demands the opposite of everything the house is famous for. Adelaide Hills supplies the fruit — a high-altitude, cool-climate zone where diurnal temperature swings preserve aromatic precision and natural acidity that the Barossa floor cannot offer. The region's red-brown clay loams over ironstone retain just enough moisture to moderate vine stress without sacrificing concentration. Winemaking follows cool-climate logic: whole-bunch pressing protocols informed by the same hand-selection rigour applied across the Penfolds range, with oak used in a supporting rather than structural role — a marked departure from the new American hogshead regime that defines Grange. The special feature here is institutional: no other wine in the Penfolds portfolio so completely inverts the house's oak-forward, warm-climate signature, making Bin 23 the clearest evidence that the blending philosophy is about fruit quality first, variety second. Drink on release through the near term for primary fruit lift, or cellar 3–6 years for secondary development.
