Christian Moueix — steward of Château Pétrus and the Libourne négociant house his father built — arrived in Napa Valley in 1982 and made a deliberate choice that ran against the valley's entire commercial logic: no irrigation, ever. On the Napanook Vineyard's volcanic, gravelly clay-loam alluvial fan at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains in Yountville, dry-farming forces root systems deep into the subsoil, producing small berries with dense phenolic concentration that no drip-line can replicate. Cool afternoon breezes off San Pablo Bay moderate the 108 planted acres, preserving the acidity and structural tension that define this estate's identity.

Vinification proceeds block by block, with hand-sorted clusters refined by optical berry-sorting, gentle pump-overs for aromatic and colour extraction, and a low-pressure vertical press for delicate skin contact. The wine ages in 100% French oak barriques for approximately 15–18 months; new-oak exposure is deliberately restrained (one-third to 40% new wood), a direct counter to the extraction-and-oak arms race that defined Napa Cabernet in the 1990s and 2000s. Barrel-to-barrel racking replaces fining agents for clarification.

The 2014 vintage — not a drought year — delivered even, measured ripening across Napanook's upper gravel blocks, producing a wine with the iron-spined, graphite-edged architecture that separates Dominus from virtually every other Napa Cabernet at this price point. Drinking well now through the mid-2030s and beyond.
