Dominus Estate 2009

When Christian Moueix — steward of Château Pétrus — planted his flag at Napanook Vineyard in 1983, he refused to irrigate, a near-heretical decision in a Napa Valley racing toward extraction and new oak. That single choice defines the 2009: roots driven deep into volcanic, gravelly clay-loam alluvial soils at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains, producing small, phenolically dense berries that no irrigation-fed vine can replicate.
Napanook's 108 planted acres are divided into 14 blocks, each fermented separately, with hand-sorted clusters refined further by optical berry-sorting. Pump-overs are kept gentle to preserve aromatic lift over brute extraction; a low-pressure vertical press handles final skin contact. The wine ages in 100% French oak barriques for approximately 15–18 months, with new oak held to roughly one-third — a fraction of what most Napa cult Cabernets demand — so wood never overwhelms the iron-spined, graphite-edged structure that is Dominus's signature.
The 2009 vintage in Napa delivered a long, even growing season with moderate temperatures, favouring the restrained Moueix house style over the opulence of warmer years. Expect dark currant, tobacco leaf, crushed gravel, and a cedar-framed tannic architecture that has been integrating for over a decade and still has runway ahead. Drink 2024–2038.
