Joseph Drouhin Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru

Founded in 1880 and now stewarded by the fourth generation, Maison Joseph Drouhin completed a full biodynamic conversion across its 100-hectare Burgundy estate — horse-ploughed, cover-cropped, ECOCERT-certified from the 2009 vintage — a commitment almost without precedent for a négociant-domaine of this scale. Clos Saint-Denis sits at the northern end of Morey-Saint-Denis, its Grand Cru soils a shallow layer of brown limestone rubble over iron-rich clay-limestone bedrock, the elevation and easterly aspect delivering a longer, cooler ripening arc than the broader Côte de Nuits floor. Winemaker Véronique Boss-Drouhin vinifies with partial whole-cluster inclusion (up to 40–50% depending on vintage), fermenting in small open vats over 2–3 weeks with pigeage and pump-overs using indigenous yeasts exclusively. Élevage runs 12–18 months in 228L French high-forest oak barriques at Grand Cru proportions of new wood, with all decisions made by tasting evaluation rather than fixed protocol. What sets this cuvée apart within the Drouhin Grand Cru range is the appellation itself: Clos Saint-Denis is the smallest of Morey's five Grands Crus, producing wines of notably finer grain and more mineral austerity than the more celebrated Clos de la Roche next door. The 2014 vintage — not listed in Drouhin's own vintage notes — is broadly regarded as a precision year in Burgundy, cool and slow-ripening, yielding structured, high-acid reds that reward patience; drinking window extends well into the 2030s.
