Lochlea Distillery was established in 2018 on a working farm in Ayrshire, Scotland — the same land Robert Burns once farmed — and 'Our Barley' is the expression that makes that provenance literal: the barley is grown on the Lochlea estate itself, harvested from the farm's own fields before being malted and distilled on-site. This single-estate philosophy closes the loop between agriculture and spirit in a way almost no Lowland producer attempts.
The Ayrshire farmland sits on fertile, low-lying ground with a mild, maritime climate shaped by proximity to the Firth of Clyde. That cool, humid air slows maturation gently, preserving cereal character while allowing the casks to work without aggression.
Maturation relies on a combination of ex-bourbon barrels and ex-oloroso sherry casks, with no peat used in the malting process. The result is an unpeated, grain-forward spirit where the provenance of the barley — rather than cask dominance — is the intended focal point. Bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered, and natural colour.
The single-estate barley sourcing is the defining transgression here: in an industry where grain origin is rarely traceable, Lochlea makes the farm the brand. Approachable now, with the structure to develop further over 2–4 years.
