When William Grant & Sons launched Wildmoor in 2024, the brand was built on a single irreplaceable asset: roughly 60 years of private cask accumulation — approximately 250,000 barrels drawn from Highland, Speyside, Lowland, and Island distilleries, including several that have permanently ceased production. Black Mountain 40 Year Old is the apex expression of that reserve, blending rare Lowland grain whisky with Highland single malts and ghost-distillery stock whose flavour profiles can never again be replicated, because the stills that produced them no longer exist.
Primary maturation spans four decades in a combination of American oak ex-bourbon casks and European oak ex-sherry casks, building the structural depth that only extreme age can deliver. The finishing stage deploys Pedro Ximénez sherry casks — a deliberate departure from the Oloroso finishing used across the rest of the Wildmoor core range — layering concentrated dried-fig, dark molasses, and raisin density over the grain-driven base without collapsing its architecture. Bottled at 46% ABV, a strength chosen to preserve aromatic lift in aged liquid that could easily read as flat at lower proof.
No other blended Scotch on the market systematically incorporates ghost-distillery components at this age statement, making Black Mountain 40 a document of Scottish whisky history as much as a drink. Chill-filtration status has not been disclosed by the producer.
