The Balvenie Vintage 1974 (700 ml)
฿1,283,999
When William Grant converted the 18th-century Balvenie New House mansion into a working distillery in 1892, he could not have anticipated that whisky laid down in 1974 — over eighty years later — would still be maturing in the flat-stone dunnage warehouses on that same estate, some sitting directly above the foundations of New Balvenie Castle. This is not an age-statement release; it is a single vintage drawn from a specific cask, making it among the rarest expressions the distillery has ever authorised. The spirit was distilled at Dufftown, Speyside, at the foot of the Conval Hills, using soft Robbie Dhu spring water — a source so strategically vital that William Grant & Sons purchased the surrounding land to protect it. Fermentation in Douglas fir wooden washbacks encouraged the lactic bacterial complexity that defines Balvenie's characteristically creamy, rounded house character, before distillation on tall copper pot stills maintained by the distillery's own on-site coppersmiths. Maturation across five decades in Balvenie's on-site warehouses — where the estate holds over 200,000 casks — allowed the spirit to develop through successive seasons of Speyside temperature swing, the slow oak extraction amplified by decades of contact. As a rare vintage single-cask bottling, this expression sits entirely outside Balvenie's standard chill-filtered, diluted-to-proof portfolio; it represents the distillery operating without its commercial safety net. No systematic vintage tasting notes are publicly documented for this release — its character belongs to the cask alone.
