The Balvenie 50 Years Old 2024 Release (700 ml)
฿2,246,999
When William Grant converted the 18th-century Balvenie New House mansion into a distillery in 1892, he could not have anticipated that whisky laid down in his dunnage warehouses — some built on the foundations of New Balvenie Castle itself — would one day rest undisturbed for half a century. The 50 Year Old 2024 Release is the product of exactly that patience: four casks selected and married by the Malt Master, each having spent a minimum of fifty years maturing on the Dufftown estate at the foot of the Conval Hills, drawing on the soft, mineral-low water of the Robbie Dhu Springs throughout production.
Distilled on Balvenie's tall copper pot stills — taller than sibling distillery Glenfiddich's, deliberately so, to encourage reflux and the distillery's signature rounded, honeyed weight — the spirit entered casks from a portfolio that spans first-fill ex-bourbon American oak and first-fill Oloroso sherry butts, the two pillars of the house's long-aged programme. Five decades in traditional flat-stone dunnage warehouses, with their naturally stable humidity and temperature, allow oak extraction to proceed slowly, building density without tipping into astringency.
What separates this expression from virtually every peer at this age statement is provenance of craft: the barley may have been partly floor-malted on Balvenie's own 1928 malting floor — one of only approximately seven still operating in Scotland — lightly kissed with Speyside peat at ~4 ppm, a trace signature that persists even across five decades of oak integration. At this age and price tier, the combination of estate-grown barley, on-site floor malting, and a four-cask marriage rather than a single-barrel release is without parallel in Speyside.
