−3%When Masataka Taketsuru transferred a pair of Coffey continuous stills — originally manufactured by Blairs Ltd. of Glasgow and installed at Nikka's Nishinomiya plant — to the Miyagikyo distillery in Sendai's forested Hirose River valley, he was importing a 19th-century Scottish technology into one of Japan's most distinctive microclimates. Miyagikyo's water, drawn from the Zao Mountain Range via the Hirose and Nikkawa rivers, registers among the lowest hardness of any Japanese distillery, a geological fact that directly shapes the spirit's texture. The valley's humid, cool forest air slows maturation and preserves delicate congeners through the aging cycle. The grain bill is corn-dominant, processed through continuous Coffey distillation — a method that strips heavier oils while retaining the cereal sweetness and creamy mouthfeel that define this style. Maturation proceeds in ex-bourbon American oak casks (re-filled, remade, and re-charred), which layer vanilla and light caramel without overwhelming the spirit's inherent lightness. What sets this expression apart categorically: Nikka releases it as a standalone grain whisky under its own label — a transparency almost no Japanese producer extends to grain distillate, which is typically absorbed invisibly into blends. No vintage character data applies to this NV expression; drink now or hold short-term.
