When 18th-century Irish distillers began mixing unmalted barley into their pot still mash to sidestep British malt taxes, they inadvertently invented a style that exists nowhere else on earth — Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey, the backbone of every Jameson blend. New Midleton Distillery in County Cork, fed by the Dungourney River and supplied by over 200 local barley farmers within 50 miles, is the sole production site for every component in the bottle. Triple distillation through copper pot stills (for the pot still whiskey) and column stills (for the maize-based grain whiskey) strips harsh congeners to a degree double-distilled Scotch peers cannot match, yielding a structurally lighter spirit from the outset. Maturation draws on ex-bourbon American oak casks as the dominant vessel, supplemented by ex-sherry Spanish butts, with a minimum of four years on the island of Ireland — one year beyond the legal floor. Barley is kiln-dried over natural gas rather than peat, a deliberate choice that keeps the malt character clean and unsmoked. The defining transgression: unlike virtually every other blended whiskey of scale, Jameson sources all component whiskeys from a single distillery, giving the blending team grain-to-glass control over house character that multi-source blends cannot replicate. As a non-vintage blend, this 4.5 L expression delivers the same consistent profile as the standard bottling — vanilla, orchard fruit, and toasted oak — with the practical advantage of volume for extended service.
