−6%When Matsui Shuzo acquired its whisky distillation licence in 2015 — over a century after the company's 1910 founding — it had already been releasing age-stated Pure Malt expressions built on sourced Scotch single malt matured on Japanese soil. The 8 Year Old sits squarely in that tier: a blended malt combining imported Scotch whisky with Japanese malt, aged a minimum of eight years in ex-bourbon American white oak, then proofed and bottled at 46% ABV in Kurayoshi City, Tottori Prefecture.
The distillery sits at the foothills of Mt. Daisen (1,729 m), an extinct volcano whose porous volcanic substrate filters the deep-aquifer groundwater used throughout production — a geological softening agent that pulls the spirit toward the house's characteristic mellow, fruit-forward register. Tottori's Sea of Japan coastal climate compounds this: near-freezing winters and summers reaching 38 °C create extreme seasonal temperature swings that accelerate cask interaction at a rate the producer explicitly compares to Islay maturation.
The ex-bourbon white oak regime drives the 8yr's profile toward green apple, light malt grain, and vanilla, with the volcanic-filtered water keeping the mouthfeel notably soft for the ABV. What separates this expression categorically from peers is its frank two-tier positioning: unlike the newer Matsui Single Malt sub-range (100% in-house distilled from 2017), the Kurayoshi Pure Malt tier does not claim Japanese distillation — a transparency that remains rare in a category still navigating post-2021 JSLMA labelling standards. Drink now; no meaningful cellaring upside.
