−5%Matsui Shuzo, founded in 1910 in Kurayoshi City, did not acquire a whisky distillation licence until 2015 — meaning the age-stated Pure Malt expressions predate any in-house distillation and are built on sourced Scotch single malt whisky matured in Japan, a provenance distinction the producer has historically understated and the Japanese whisky trade has actively debated. This is the NAS entry of that tier. The distillery sits at the foothills of Mt. Daisen (1,729 m), an extinct volcano whose porous volcanic substrate filters deep-aquifer groundwater to exceptional softness — that water is the defining textural signature across every Kurayoshi expression, producing a mellow, low-mineral mouthfeel that distinguishes it from the harder-water profiles of Nikka or Suntory. Maturation relies primarily on ex-bourbon American white oak, delivering vanilla and green apple character; the extreme seasonal temperature range of Tottori's Sea of Japan coast — sub-zero winters against summers reaching 38 °C — drives accelerated cask interaction. Bottled at 43% ABV; chill-filtration status is not publicly disclosed for this expression. The critical differentiator within the Kurayoshi portfolio: this NAS Pure Malt is the most transparent entry point for understanding the house's sourced-malt style before committing to the in-house-distilled Matsui single malt tier launched in 2018.
