With a Peaty Tang (700 ml)

Tomintoul spent its first 35 years almost entirely as anonymous blending stock — a 3.3-million-litre-per-year Speyside workhorse invisible to single malt drinkers until Angus Dundee acquired it in 2000. The decision to release a peated expression from a distillery whose entire identity rested on a gentle, unpeated character was a deliberate transgression. With a Peaty Tang sits between the unpeated core range and the full-throttle Old Ballantruan (55 ppm), offering a measured smoke register against the distillery's signature soft-water base.

The Ballantruan Spring in the Cromdale Hills feeds the distillery at approximately 345 m elevation — exceptionally pure, soft water that suppresses heavy spirit congeners and keeps the malt character clean even when peated malt enters the mash. Fermentation runs 54–60 hours in stainless-steel washbacks; high-reflux steam-heated stills collect new make at roughly 69% ABV, preserving delicacy. Maturation proceeds in American white oak ex-Bourbon casks, the dominant vessel across the range, lending vanilla and cereal sweetness that cushions the smoke rather than amplifying it.

What makes this expression unusual is the pairing of Speyside's lightest distillery character with peat — a combination almost no Speyside peer attempts at any commercial scale. The result is smoke that reads as heather ash and dried orchard skin rather than coastal iodine, shaped entirely by the soft-water distillate beneath it. Drink now through the medium term; the Bourbon oak integration is already settled.
