The Macallan 12 Year Old Triple Cask (700 ml)

When Alexander Reid founded the Easter Elchies distillery in 1824, he built it on the north-west slopes of the River Spey valley — a deliberate choice of site that still dictates the spirit's character two centuries later. The alluvial soils of the 485-acre estate and on-site spring water feed a 17-tonne lauter mash tun, while the famously squat, 3,900-litre spirit stills — cast from 'death masks' of the original copper shapes by Forsyths — restrict copper-vapour contact to produce a heavier, oilier new make than any other Speyside distillery of comparable scale.

Triple Cask Matured is the expression where Macallan's upstream-integrated cask programme operates across three wood types simultaneously: sherry-seasoned European oak (Oloroso-seasoned, air-dried Spanish staves from Galicia and Asturias), sherry-seasoned American oak, and ex-bourbon American oak — a vatting unique within the core range. The European casks deliver dried fruit density; the American sherry oak adds vanilla lift; the ex-bourbon barrels introduce a lighter, coconut-tinged counterpoint that distinguishes this expression from the Sherry Oak 12's monolithic richness. Natural colour only, no E150a. Bottled at 40% ABV — the lowest in the core lineup — which softens the oak architecture and makes the grain's inherent weight more perceptible.

The special feature: Triple Cask is the only Macallan core expression to deliberately introduce ex-bourbon wood, breaking the brand's sherry-only orthodoxy to produce a measurably lighter, more approachable profile without sacrificing the oily new-make texture the small stills were designed to create.
