A'Bunadh (Gaelic: 'of the origin') was conceived to replicate how 19th-century Speyside whisky would have tasted — drawn straight from the cask, uncut and unfiltered. That founding intent drives every technical decision in the production. Aberlour distillery sits on the banks of the Lour Burn in the heart of Speyside, drawing soft, mineral-low water from Ben Rinnes — a granite massif whose filtration produces a spirit base of unusual sweetness and roundness. The whisky is matured exclusively in first-fill Oloroso Sherry butts, the large 500-litre Spanish oak vessels delivering dense dried-fruit saturation and oxidative spice that smaller barriques cannot replicate at this intensity. Bottled at natural cask strength (batches vary, typically 59–61% ABV) and non-chill-filtered, the oils and long-chain esters that standard expressions strip away remain fully intact, producing a texture that visibly louches when water is added. What separates A'Bunadh from most Speyside cask-strength releases is the 100% first-fill Sherry butt policy — no grain-forward refill casks blended in to soften the profile. Each numbered batch is a snapshot of a specific fill cycle, making batch-to-batch variation a deliberate feature rather than a flaw.
