When Bruichladdich — the distillery that built its reputation on unpeated Islay spirit — decided to produce the world's most heavily peated whisky under the same roof, it was a deliberate act of contradiction. Octomore is that transgression made permanent. The 09.1 edition is peated to levels that dwarf any Islay peer, in a category where Bruichladdich's own Octomore series regularly exceeds 200 ppm — multiples of what Port Ellen or Laphroaig achieve. The distillery sits at near sea level on the western shore of Loch Indaal, Rhinns of Islay, where Atlantic-maritime air, Gulf Stream humidity, and flat brick-built dunnage warehouses conspire to slow maturation and concentrate coastal character into every cask. Reduction water flows from the Octomore Farm spring, cutting through ancient Lewisian gneiss — a high-silica source unique on the island, lending a mineral precision that keeps the peat from turning blunt. Distilled in the house's unusually tall, narrow-necked spirit stills (6-metre column, 0.9m neck diameter), maximising copper reflux to produce a clean new make that carries peat as aromatic smoke rather than crude tar. Bottled at cask strength, no chill-filtration, no caramel colouring — the full-proof delivery preserves the textural weight that lower-ABV bottlings would sacrifice. What no peer does: achieve this ppm ceiling while retaining the distillery's signature coastal acidity and barley sweetness, a structural tension that defines the Octomore paradox.
