The Glenrothes Vintage Reserve (700 ml)

From 1993 under Berry Bros. & Rudd, The Glenrothes pioneered the vintage-dated single malt format in Scotland — releasing whisky by year of distillation rather than age statement, treating maturation as a winemaker would a harvest. When Edrington reacquired the brand in 2017 and replaced vintages with age statements, the Vintage Reserve became the bridge expression carrying that philosophy forward.

The distillery sits in a sheltered glen beside the Burn of Rothes at the foot of the Mannoch Hills, drawing production water exclusively from four private on-estate springs naturally filtered through volcanic bedrock — one of very few Scottish distilleries with a fully proprietary water source. That mineral filtration underpins the house's characteristically clean, bright new make.

In the still house — nicknamed 'The Cathedral of Speyside' — five tall copper pot stills with oversized boiling balls run at roughly half the flow rate of comparable Speyside operations, maximising reflux and generating a dense, estery spirit. Only the hearts cut, representing less than ~20% of total distillate, proceeds to maturation in predominantly first-fill sherry-seasoned butts (European and American oak, up to 700 L, sourced from Jerez), aged in traditional dunnage warehouses. Bottled at natural colour, non-chill-filtered.

The Vintage Reserve's defining transgression: it blends multiple maturation years to replicate the vintage-release character Edrington retired — a producer deliberately engineering nostalgia into a no-age-statement format. Drinking window: now through the next several years.
