When The Macallan launched what was then called Fine Oak — now Triple Cask Matured — it was a deliberate transgression: a distillery synonymous with dense Oloroso sherry character introducing American oak and ex-bourbon wood into its core lineup for the first time, producing a structurally lighter, more approachable expression without abandoning the cask-first philosophy that has defined Easter Elchies since Alexander Reid founded the distillery in 1824.

The Easter Elchies Estate sits on the north-west slopes of the River Spey valley near Craigellachie, Moray, where alluvial soils and on-site spring water feed a 17-tonne lauter mash tun. The relatively fertile, unconsolidated ground is less about mineral tension and more about consistent barley quality — the estate grows its own grain, and the water source is used directly for mashing.

The new make is shaped by 24 famously squat spirit stills of just 3,900 litres each — cast from death masks of the original historic stills by Forsyths — which limit copper-vapour contact and produce a heavier, oilier spirit than any standard Speyside wash still configuration. That weight is the canvas. Triple Cask Matured vats three distinct wood types: sherry-seasoned European oak (Oloroso-seasoned, sourced from Galicia and Cantabria, air-dried and coopered under Macallan's vertically integrated cask programme), sherry-seasoned American oak, and ex-bourbon American oak — the bourbon component introducing vanilla and lighter stone-fruit registers absent from the Sherry Oak range. Bottled at 40% ABV with natural colour only, no added E150a.

The special feature here is structural: this is the only expression in the core Macallan lineup where ex-bourbon American oak plays an explicit role, pulling the profile away from the raisin-and-dark-chocolate density of the Sherry Oak 15 toward dried citrus peel, toffee, and warm ginger — same estate, same stills, fundamentally different wood architecture.
