Douglas Laing & Co., founded in Glasgow in 1948 by Fred Douglas Laing, built its independent bottling philosophy on a single conviction: the cask should speak without interference. The Provenance range is the purest expression of that conviction — every bottle traces back to one named distillery, one cask number, one unrepeatable yield of 300–850 bottles. Fettercairn distillery, set in the Howe of the Mearns at the foot of the Cairngorm foothills in the eastern Highlands, draws water from the Cairn o' Mount spring and operates in a cool, damp microclimate that slows maturation and preserves cereal and waxy character through the years. This 12-year expression rests in a refill hogshead — ex-bourbon, used wood — a deliberate choice that keeps new-oak lactone and vanilla influence subordinate, allowing Fettercairn's distinctive toffee-apple and light sulphur-edged malt to remain the dominant register. Bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill-filtered, with no added colouring, the spirit retains the natural fatty texture that chill-filtration would strip. What sets this release apart within the Provenance tier is the combination of a 12-year age statement — at the upper end of the range's typical 6–14 year window — with a distillery that rarely appears as a named single cask at accessible price points. Each label prints the exact cask number, distillation month and year, and bottling month and year, making provenance (in every sense) fully auditable.
