Bowmore
Bowmore 18 Years Old (700 ml)
฿8,499
When Bowmore's founders constructed the No.1 Vaults in 1779, they built directly onto the Loch Indaal shoreline — partially below sea level — creating the only confirmed sub-tidal maturation warehouse in Scotland. For 18 years, casks here breathe Atlantic humidity through stone walls that register every tide, a physical condition no mainland distillery can replicate.
The River Laggan feeds the distillery after running through ancient peaty ground, while barley kilned over local Islay peat for ~15 hours reaches 25–30 ppm phenols — deliberately calibrated below southern-shore neighbours Laphroaig and Ardbeg. Pear-shaped wash stills with slightly ascending lyne arms generate copper reflux that lifts the spirit toward fruit and honey before the smoke can dominate.
Maturation leans on ~86% ex-bourbon American oak for the honeyed, vanilla-driven backbone, with ~14% ex-Oloroso sherry European oak contributing dark dried fruit and cocoa. Bottled at 40% ABV, the 18 YO represents the core range's fullest integration of these two cask streams across nearly two decades of coastal aging.
What distinguishes this expression categorically: Bowmore is one of only three Islay distilleries still operating active floor maltings, hand-turning barley every four hours — a labour commitment that directly shapes the phenolic consistency underpinning every 18-year-old batch. The extended age statement allows the brine-laden vault character to fully absorb into the sherry-fruit structure, a convergence that younger expressions in the range do not achieve.
