Diplomatico Planas is built on a deliberate contradiction: years of barrel aging stripped back to transparency. Produced at Destilerías Unidas in the foothills of the Andes in Lara state, Venezuela, the distillery draws on sugarcane grown in a tropical highland climate where cooler nights slow fermentation and concentrate aromatic precursors in the molasses base.

The liquid is distilled across column and batch pot stills — a dual-method approach that layers light, clean column distillate with heavier, ester-rich pot still character. It then rests in ex-bourbon American oak casks for up to six years, accumulating vanilla, dried fruit, and wood spice before undergoing charcoal filtration to remove all color while retaining a significant portion of the aged congeners.

What sets Planas apart within the white rum category is precisely this: it carries genuine aged complexity — dried citrus peel, toasted almond, soft caramel — in a bottle that reads visually as unaged. Most white rums are either unaged or minimally rested; Planas inverts that expectation entirely. Bottled at 47% ABV, it delivers more aromatic intensity than the standard 40% expressions in the Diplomatico range.
