Black Seal Dark Bermuda Rum (750 ml)
฿฿
Gosling Brothers began importing and blending rum in Hamilton, Bermuda in 1806, and Black Seal took its name from the black wax used to seal barrels — a practice that predates the modern bottling line by generations. The rum is a blend of pot and column still distillates, aged in previously used American oak bourbon barrels before being passed through a charcoal mellowing process that strips harsh edges without stripping character. Bermuda's subtropical Atlantic climate — warm, humid, with significant oceanic influence — accelerates barrel interaction and drives higher angel's share than continental aging environments, concentrating the spirit faster per year of maturation. What sets Black Seal apart within the dark rum category is its proprietary blend ratio, kept unchanged since the 19th century, and its legally protected status as the only rum permitted in an official Dark 'n' Stormy cocktail — a trademark Gosling's has actively enforced in court. The result is a dense, molasses-forward dark rum bottled at 40% ABV, built for both mixing and sipping, with a finish that leans toward roasted coffee and bittersweet chocolate rather than the candied sweetness common in mass-market dark rums.
