Mount Gay Eclipse (700 ml)
฿1,299
Mount Gay traces its documented history to a 1703 deed of sale on Barbados — making it the world's oldest surviving rum producer. That founding fact is not marketing: the original estate sits on the island's coral limestone terrain in St. Lucy parish, where the porous rock filters rainwater into naturally mineral-rich wells that feed fermentation to this day.
Eclipse is the distillery's entry-level blended expression, combining pot still rum (for body and ester complexity) with column still rum (for lighter, cleaner spirit), both distilled from molasses derived from Barbadian sugarcane. The blend is aged in charred ex-bourbon American oak barrels, with the youngest component meeting a minimum age threshold that gives the spirit its characteristic amber colour and vanilla-forward wood integration.
What separates Eclipse from most entry-level Caribbean rums is the deliberate retention of pot still distillate in the blend — a choice that keeps a discernible weight and dried-fruit character that column-only rums at this price point rarely achieve. The result is a consistently approachable, lightly funky profile that has remained largely unchanged in character for decades, making it a reliable benchmark for the Bajan style.
